What Geng Metal Represents
In Bazi (八字), the Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ) is the Heavenly Stem (天干) that sits in your day pillar, the one that anchors your chart and says something about your core orientation. Geng Metal (庚金, gēng jīn) is the seventh of the ten stems and carries Yang Metal (阳金) energy. Its classic image is raw iron, a sword, or an axe: heavy, direct, and built to cut.

Geng Metal and the Seasons
The Month's dominant energy (月令, yuèlìng) shapes how any Day Master expresses itself. For Geng Metal, the season matters a great deal because it determines whether the iron is being tempered or tested in the wrong climate.

A Geng Metal Day Master born in autumn (申酉月) may already have abundant Metal, while one born in spring (寅卯月) faces seasonally strong Wealth. Neither season proves that Fire, Wood, Earth, or Metal is favourable. Hidden stems, roots, relationships, climate, and possible Structure still have to be assessed.
This is why a responsible reading never stops at the Day Master. It looks at the whole chart: the other stems, the branches, the seasonal strength, the elemental balance, and the current luck cycle (大运, dàyùn) that shapes what a person is actually facing right now.

Action and timing. The cutting image can prompt a question about decisiveness, but Output, Authority, Companion, and effective strength determine whether the chart supports quick action or restraint. Geng Metal alone does not prove impulsiveness.
Standards and flexibility. The Metal image can help frame questions about fairness, commitment, and boundaries. Actual rigidity, loyalty, or difficulty letting go requires evidence from the Ten Gods, pillar positions, relationships, and the person's lived experience.
Directness and delivery. Communication style should be read through Output and its interactions, not the Metal metaphor alone. The image can still help a reader ask whether clarity is landing as intended.
Finding an outlet. Usable Water Output may make teaching, writing, building, or another form of visible contribution relevant. Weak or absent Water does not by itself prove that a person struggles to communicate or turn decisions into action.
Responding to pressure. Heavy Fire Authority can discipline strong Geng Metal or overwhelm weak Geng Metal. How someone responds requires chart-level evidence; Fire pressure alone does not prove rigidity, control, or a particular coping style.
The Stem Combination That Matters for Geng Metal
Geng Metal has a notable stem combination (天干合): it pairs with Yi Wood (乙), Direct Wealth for Geng, in the Yi-Geng combination (乙庚合). The pair can transform into Metal under supporting conditions.
The combination does not automatically transform. Month command, supporting Metal qi, roots, and the wider chart determine whether it changes element or merely binds and restrains both stems. That effective-strength result comes before any Wealth interpretation.
When Yi is usable, the relation may make resources or management relevant. It does not by itself prove a recurring personality conflict between decisiveness and flexibility.
Climate Matters: Cold and Hot Charts
Geng Metal responds differently depending on the chart's overall temperature. A winter-born chart may be cold (寒), and seasonally strong Water drains Metal as Output. The regulating element (调候, tiáohòu) becomes relevant here. Fire may provide warmth when the full chart can withstand Authority pressure.
A summer-born chart may be hot and dry (暖燥). Strong Fire can overwhelm weak Metal. Water may regulate some charts, but it also drains Metal and must be strong enough to function rather than disappear into the heat. Earth remains Resource for Geng Metal, while Metal is Companion energy; neither is automatically useful in a hot chart.
These are chart-level climate questions, not direct lifestyle prescriptions. Being challenged more is not the same thing as adding Fire to a chart, and a hot chart does not make pressure inherently harmful. Climate is one part of deciding what is useful, alongside the Day Master's effective strength and the chart's Structure.
How to Use This in Practice
If you learn that you have a Geng Metal Day Master, the most useful response is not to decide that you are "decisive and direct" and stop there. Instead, look at your chart for clues about what supports or pressures the Day Master. Use the cutting image to ask whether quick action serves the situation or whether more time would improve the decision.
Geng Metal gives a symbolic starting orientation around cutting, standards, and decisive force. How that plays out in career, relationships, money, and wellbeing depends on the whole chart.
The real value of understanding your Day Master is not to label yourself. It is to identify chart-supported patterns, compare them with lived experience, and make more conscious choices.
