Annual Luck: How Each Year Activates Your Chart 流年
Annual Cycle (流年) adds one stem and branch for a year; interpret them through natal-chart, Luck-Pillar, and relationship cross-checks.
Every year brings a new combination of Heavenly Stem (天干, tiāngān) and Earthly Branch (地支, dìzhī). In Bazi (八字), that timing layer is called the Annual Cycle (流年, liúnián), annual influence, or annual pillar. It shows which elements and relationships enter the analysis for that year.
Annual luck is not a fortune. It is a timing layer. When you understand how the year's energy lands on your natal chart, the question shifts from "is this a good year?" to "what is this year asking of me?"
How the Year Is Determined
The annual pillar uses the same sixty-year stem-branch cycle (六十甲子) that produces every pillar in a Bazi chart. Each year pairs one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches, cycling sequentially through all sixty combinations before repeating.
The year boundary for Bazi purposes is Li Chun (立春), the solar term marking the start of spring, which falls around 3–4 February. This is distinct from Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar and can fall weeks before or after Li Chun. Most traditional Bazi schools use the solar-year boundary for the annual pillar. Some practitioners reference the lunar calendar instead, so when comparing readings, check which convention is used.
Three Layers Must Be Cross-Checked
The Annual Cycle does not operate alone. A practitioner compares three layers and the relationships between them:

Read Annual-to-Natal, Annual-to-Luck, and Luck-to-Natal relationships separately before combining them. A Wealth (财) stem in both timing layers is not automatically stronger or favourable: either stem may be combined, clashed, controlled, unrooted, or redirected by the wider structure. How the Year's Stem Interacts with Your Chart
The year's Heavenly Stem interacts with your natal stems through the same mechanics used in Heavenly Stems analysis:

Translate the annual stem and every stem it contacts into Ten Gods (十神) relative to the Day Master (日主). The relation changes how those functions are weighed; it does not promise a partnership, conflict, opportunity, or other event.
For example, Bing Fire (丙) and Xin Metal (辛) can combine toward Water. If transformation conditions are not met, the stems may be tied while retaining their original elements. How the Year's Branch Interacts with Your Chart
The year's Earthly Branch uses the complete relationship framework from Earthly Branches analysis:

The position being affected matters, but it does not determine an event. A clash with the Month Branch (月支) changes the chart's seasonal foundation and may raise questions about work or the social environment. A clash with the Day Branch (日支), also called the Marriage Palace (夫妻宫), makes partnership or household questions relevant. In both cases, the natal chart, Luck Pillar, structure, and Useful God (用神) determine how the relation should be read.
The branch being affected also holds hidden stems (藏干), so a clash or combination changes how those inner elements participate in the chart, not just the surface branch.
The Year's Hidden Stems
An Earthly Branch is not a single flat symbol. Each branch holds one to three hidden stems, and when the year's branch interacts with your chart, those hidden stems come along too. The hidden stems carry their own Ten God identities relative to your Day Master, adding a second layer of meaning to the branch interaction.
For example, the Snake (巳) branch holds Bing Fire (丙), Geng Metal (庚), and Wu Earth (戊). If Snake arrives as the year's branch, all three hidden stems enter the effective-strength and Ten God analysis. They are not literally unlocked by transformation. A successful branch transformation may instead redirect how the branch's original qi is weighed, so season, roots, and the wider chart still matter.
A Worked Example
Consider a female chart calculated for 14 November 1953 at 19:00. The calculator places Geng Wu (庚午) as the active Luck Pillar from 2021 through 2030; the Annual Cycle for 2025 is Yi Si (乙巳).

Start with the natal chart. The two 巳 branches have Fire as main qi, 亥 has Water as main qi, and 戌 has Earth as main qi. The Ji Earth (己) Day Master also finds Earth roots through hidden 戊 in both 巳 branches and 戌. The two visible 癸 stems are Indirect Wealth (偏财), while Hour Stem 甲 is Direct Officer (正官).
Resolve the natal relationships before adding timing. Natal 甲 combines with and controls the 己 Day Master, while 己 controls both 癸 stems. At branch level, natal 亥 clashes separately with the Year and Day 巳 branches. These are the baseline relations that the timing layers contact.
Luck-to-Natal. Luck Stem 庚 is Hurting Officer (伤官). It clashes with and controls natal 甲 Direct Officer. Luck Branch 午 contains 丁 Indirect Resource (偏印) and 己 Companion (比肩). 午 joins natal 戌 in a partial Fire Three Combination and joins the natal 巳 branches in a partial Fire Three Meeting; neither partial frame guarantees transformation.
Annual-to-Natal. Annual Stem 乙 is Seven Killings (七杀) and controls the 己 Day Master. Annual Branch 巳 repeats the natal Snake qi and adds another clash with natal 亥. Its hidden stems are 丙 Direct Resource (正印), 庚 Hurting Officer (伤官), and 戊 Rob Wealth (劫财); all three must be considered without assuming that one label dictates the year.
Annual-to-Luck. Annual 乙 combines with Luck 庚 toward Metal, while 庚 also controls 乙. Whether the combination transforms or merely ties the stems depends on the full conditions. Annual 巳 joins Luck 午 in a partial Fire Three Meeting. These contacts can change how much annual Seven Killings and Luck-Pillar Hurting Officer remain effective.
Only after all three comparisons can the reader assess structure, effective strength, and useful or unfavourable qi. The mechanics do not prove amplified authority pressure, career opportunity, or any other life event; they establish the questions the 2025 reading must answer.
Not All Clashes Are Bad
A clash (六冲) is not automatically negative or helpful. It shows that two branches oppose one another; the reader must determine which qi is supported, what other relationships share those branches, and what remains after the clash.
If the annual branch pressures a branch carrying unfavourable qi, that may reduce an excess. If it pressures a needed root or useful qi, it may weaken support. Neither conclusion follows until combinations, transformations, the Luck Pillar, and effective strength are resolved.
The same logic applies to combinations. A branch may bind another branch without transforming, complete a larger frame, or be redirected by a competing relation. Context decides the mechanic before the reader assigns a life meaning.
Period 9 Is a Separate Framework
Period 9 (九紫离火运, 2024–2043) belongs to the Three Eras and Nine Periods (三元九运) framework used in Xuan Kong Flying Star (玄空飞星) feng shui. It is not a Bazi pillar, and it does not add a Fire stem or branch to your chart. A practitioner may compare the two systems, but should keep the claims separate: complete the Bazi timing analysis first. See Bazi and Feng Shui for the boundary between the two.
Using Annual Luck Practically
The practical value of understanding annual luck is preparation, not prediction.
Use the Annual Cycle to frame questions after the mechanics are established. If work is the real concern, identify the relevant Ten Gods and branch positions, then compare them with the person's actual circumstances. Apply the same discipline to money, relationships, health, or another topic; no generic annual element supplies a decision by itself.
The most grounded approach is to treat annual timing as a planning lens, not a verdict. Cross-check the Annual Cycle with the natal chart and active Luck Pillar, resolve effective strength and structure, and then ask what practical questions deserve attention.
