Marriage Palace in Bazi: Reading the Day Branch 婚姻宫

The Day Branch (日支, rìzhī) sits beneath the Day Master in a Bazi (八字, bāzì) chart. Traditional relationship reading calls it the Marriage Palace (婚姻宫, hūnyīn gōng). It is a chart position to investigate, not a verdict about marriage, a partner's personality, or the timing of a relationship.

What the Day Branch Contains

Each of the Four Pillars (四柱, sìzhù) contains a Heavenly Stem above an Earthly Branch. The Day Stem is the Day Master, while the Day Branch supplies the branch qi immediately beneath it.

A branch is not a single flat element. It contains one to three Hidden Stems (藏干, cánggān), classified as main, middle, or residual qi. Each hidden stem becomes a Ten God relative to the Day Master. This technical mapping is more reliable than assigning a fixed relationship personality to the animal sign.

Ox (丑), for example, contains:

Ji is Eating God, not Hurting Officer. Gui is Seven Killings, not Direct Officer. The visible Geng Metal in the Year Stem is Direct Wealth for Ding Fire, so the chart also shows why visible stems and hidden palace qi must be read separately.

The Year Rat combines with the Day Ox toward Earth. The Hour Horse harms the Day Ox; Ox and Horse do not clash. Separately, the Year Rat clashes with the Hour Horse, and Tiger with Horse forms a partial Fire frame missing Dog. Only the Rat–Ox combination and Ox–Horse harm directly involve the Marriage Palace. None of these relations specifies a family conflict, children issue, or relationship outcome from pillar position alone.

The Twelve Possible Day Branches

The branch animal does not supply a relationship personality. Use the branch to map hidden qi and ask conditional technical questions:

These questions prevent a branch label from becoming a claim that someone is loyal, guarded, passionate, critical, or likely to overlook warning signs.

Relations Involving the Marriage Palace

The Day Branch can participate in a combination, clash, harm, punishment, destruction, or three-branch frame. These relations can coexist. One should not be assumed to cancel another.

Clashes 冲

The six Branch Clashes are:

A clash involving the Day Branch marks direct branch opposition at the Marriage Palace. It does not guarantee separation, conflict with a named relative, or an event in the pillar's associated life area. Season, effective strength, hidden stems, competing relations, and real circumstances decide its importance.

Combinations 合

A six combination binds two branches and may redirect their effective contribution. Transformation is a separate conclusion that requires seasonal and structural support. Without sufficient support, the branches remain present and bound rather than turning automatically into the named outcome element.

A combination with the Day Branch does not mean a partner has been "pulled away." Nor does the other pillar identify what captured the partner's attention. Read the relation first as qi mechanics; add a relationship interpretation only when the full chart and lived context support it.

Harms 害

Branch Harms are distinct pairs, not weaker versions of clashes. A harm may indicate indirect interference between two branches, but words such as resentment, emotional unavailability, or betrayal are not contained in the mechanic itself. Check which hidden qi is affected and whether that qi is useful.

Punishments 刑

Branch Punishments include the Tiger–Snake–Monkey group (寅巳申), the Ox–Dog–Goat group (丑戌未), and the Rat–Rabbit punishment (子卯). Partial and full formations should be identified accurately.

Self-punishment applies only when Dragon, Horse, Rooster, or Pig repeats: 辰辰, 午午, 酉酉, or 亥亥. Rat and Rabbit do not self-punish. Rat–Horse and Rabbit–Rooster are clashes, while Rat–Rabbit is a punishment.

The Partner Star Is a Separate Lens

The Partner Star and Marriage Palace answer different technical questions. Through the traditional male-chart lens, Wealth is the Partner Star. Through the traditional female-chart lens, Direct Officer and Seven Killings are the Partner Stars. These conventions should not be imposed as fixed gender roles.

If Partner Star qi is hidden inside the Day Branch, the two lenses overlap. If it appears elsewhere, pillar position supplies context but not a meeting route or relationship timetable. A Year Pillar placement does not prove a family introduction, and an Hour Pillar placement does not prove a later partner.

Timing Adds Relations, Not Outcomes

Luck Pillars and Annual Cycles add temporary stems and branches. An incoming branch may clash, combine, harm, punish, or complete a frame involving the Day Branch. An incoming stem may expose or interact with a traditional Partner Star.

These are conditions to assess, not promises of marriage, deepening, tension, or separation. The natal chart, current Luck Pillar, annual layer, effective strength, and real-life situation must agree before a reader connects timing to an event.

A Calculator-Verified Pressure Example

This chart is 17 June 1960 at 12:00. The Rat Day Branch contains Gui Water, which is Direct Officer for the Bing Fire Day Master. The second Rat in the Year Pillar repeats that qi, but two Rats do not form a self-punishment.

The Month and Hour Horses each clash with the Rat Marriage Palace. Because the Year Branch is also Rat, the chart contains four Rat–Horse clash pairings in total. The two Horses form a Horse self-punishment. That is the chart's actual self-punishment; the Rat–Horse relation remains a clash.

Through the traditional male-chart lens, Geng Metal in the Year Stem is visible Indirect Wealth. The chart therefore does have a visible Partner Star. Ren Water in the Month Stem is Seven Killings, and Jia Wood in the Hour Stem is Indirect Resource. Bing clashes with Ren at stem level, while Jia clashes with Geng. These mechanics show multiple pressure routes, but they do not specify relationship events or their timing.

A Careful Reading Order

1. Map the Day Branch's hidden stems and Ten Gods.
2. Identify every recognised relation that directly involves the Day Branch.
3. Assess season, effective strength, and competing branch relations.
4. Locate the traditional Partner Star without turning position into a prediction.
5. Add timing only as another layer of stems, branches, and relations.

The Marriage Palace is useful because it focuses the relationship inquiry. It remains one position inside a full chart, and its symbols cannot replace communication, consent, therapy, or personal judgement.
