Output Structure: Expression, Craft, and Creative Drive 食伤格
Output Structure (食伤格) uses Eating God or Hurting Officer as Month-branch main qi; strength and chart context decide how expression functions.
| Structure | Chinese | Key Ten Gods |

| Output structure | 食伤格 | Month Order main qi is Eating God 食神 or Hurting Officer 伤官 |
Some people process experience by talking. Others build first and discover what they think only after the work exists. Others write, perform, design, or teach, and only realise what they believe once it is outside of them. If your reading points to an Output structure (食伤格), the real question is not "am I creative?" but rather "what happens when expression is the primary engine of my chart — and can the Day Master sustain the outflow?"
That distinction matters because the most common mistake in reading Output is treating it as a verdict about talent. The structure describes a dynamic: how someone engages with creation, visibility, and the pressure to produce. A strong Output structure can show someone who channels expression into real value; the same structure under pressure can describe chronic exhaustion or scattered effort. The label is the same. The context changes everything.
The Output Element
In Bazi (八字), each person has a Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ), the element that represents the self in the chart. The Output element is whichever element the Day Master naturally produces (生, shēng) in the Five Elements (五行) productive cycle. Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood.
This framing matters because it positions output not as something that simply appears, but as something the Day Master releases through energy, effort, and expression. The producing relationship can function as usable capacity when the Day Master has enough support to sustain the outflow, or as a drain when it does not. Effective strength, roots, season, and interactions decide which reading fits; the Output label alone does not.
| Day Master | Output element | Day Master produces |
|---|---|---|
| Wood 木 | Fire 火 | Wood generates Fire |
| Fire 火 | Earth 土 | Fire generates Earth |
| Earth 土 | Metal 金 | Earth generates Metal |
| Metal 金 | Water 水 | Metal generates Water |
| Water 水 | Wood 木 | Water generates Wood |
The Ten Gods (十神) framework then splits the Output element by polarity. Eating God (食神) is the stem of the same polarity as the Day Master; Hurting Officer (伤官) is the stem of opposite polarity. That split is not decorative. It is the mechanical reason the two Output stars describe different operating modes: relaxed production versus sharp challenge. For the full element-by-element mapping, see Output Stars in Bazi.
How the Structure Forms
Classical Bazi does not call a chart an Output structure just because Output stars appear somewhere in the chart. A practitioner first resolves the chart's stem and branch interactions, evaluates each element's effective strength, and checks whether a special structure such as a following or transformation structure applies. If no special structure supersedes the normal Ten God structures, the Month branch's main qi (月令主气) sets the structure. When that main qi belongs to the Output family, the chart qualifies as an Output structure.
This means the structure is anchored in the seasonal and environmental tone set at birth, not in a stray star floating in a secondary pillar. The Month branch governs the working identity and the professional environment; when its main qi is Output, the person's orientation toward expression and production is not incidental. It is structural.
Two conditions refine the reading:
-
Eating God Structure (食神格, shí shén gé): The Month branch's main qi is Eating God. Classical guidance says this structure favours a strong Day Master that can sustain the natural outflow (喜身旺). The reading then often centres on Eating God producing Wealth (食神生财) or Eating God controlling Seven Killings (食神制杀), depending on what else is in the chart. Without sufficient Day Master support, the outflow can overtax the chart's foundation.
-
Hurting Officer Structure (伤官格, shāng guān gé): The Month branch's main qi is Hurting Officer. Classical guidance favours a Day Master strong enough to sustain the sharper outflow, with Resource support (印) to channel intensity into depth (喜身旺、伤官配印), or a clear Wealth route to convert expression into tangible results (伤官生财). Without enough capacity or that channel, the boundary-pushing may burn bridges without building anything lasting.
Once special structures have been ruled out and the normal Output structure identified, the reader still has to judge whether it is supported, mixed with the other Output star, or damaged by clashes and combinations. A properly formed structure that is subsequently weakened or broken does not behave the same way as a clean one. For the principles behind what keeps a structure intact, see Useful God in Bazi.
Sub-Types of Output Structure
The Output structure branches into two distinct sub-types depending on which Output star dominates the Month branch's main qi.
| Sub-type | Chinese | Key star | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eating God Structure | 食神格 | Month Order main qi is 食神 | More measured or ease-oriented expression when supported |
| Hurting Officer Structure | 伤官格 | Month Order main qi is 伤官 | More direct or boundary-testing expression when supported |
Eating God Structure 食神格
In this pattern, Eating God (食神) is the Month branch's main qi. When it is usable and the Day Master can sustain the outflow, expression may be more measured, consistent, or ease-oriented. That tendency can support craft, teaching, design, performance, or other work where steady production matters, but the structure does not guarantee talent or prescribe an occupation.
The practical question is what channels that production. Visible Wealth can give Output a tangible destination through Eating God producing Wealth (食神生财). Seven Killings can create a different route when Eating God is strong and well placed enough to control it (食神制杀). Without a workable channel, expression may remain diffuse even when the underlying capacity is present.
When Eating God is strong but poorly channelled, production can become scattered or disconnected from practical outcomes. Classical guidance therefore values Eating God producing Wealth as a route that converts expression or craft into something tangible. Whether that route is functional still depends on the Day Master's capacity and on the actual stem and branch interactions.
Resource (印) can restrain Output as part of the elemental control relationship, but restraint is not automatically harmful. The narrower Owl Spirit seizing Eating God (枭神夺食) warning specifically concerns prominent Indirect Resource (偏印/枭神) suppressing a vulnerable Eating God. Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Eating God, and Hurting Officer must be identified separately before applying that name. See Resource Controls Output for how strength and polarity change the result.

Hurting Officer Structure 伤官格
Here, Hurting Officer (伤官) is the Month branch's main qi. When supported, expression may be more direct, analytical, or willing to test established boundaries. That tendency can be useful in work that rewards critique, invention, advocacy, or independent judgment, but the rest of the chart decides whether it becomes constructive challenge, unmanaged friction, or something in between.
Visible Wealth can redirect Hurting Officer into tangible output through Hurting Officer producing Wealth (伤官生财). Resource can provide another route through Hurting Officer paired with Resource (伤官配印), where learning or discipline helps shape sharper expression. Neither configuration can be inferred from the structure name alone; the relevant stars must actually be present and usable.
When Hurting Officer meets Direct Officer (伤官见官), self-directed expression and formal authority are in tension. The encounter is not inherently destructive: prominence, roots, Resource mediation, Day Master capacity, and other interactions determine whether it becomes useful scrutiny or recurring conflict. See Hurting Officer Sees Officer for the full treatment.
Classical guidance values both Hurting Officer producing Wealth and Hurting Officer paired with Resource, but neither is a universal requirement or a promise of career success. They are possible routes through which the structure can be organised, subject to effective strength and the full chart.

Two example charts
The calculator-derived charts below illustrate the two sub-types. Both use a Bing Fire (丙) Day Master, for which Earth is the Output element: 戊 (Yang Earth) is Eating God and 己 (Yin Earth) is Hurting Officer. Their interactions are included because a valid chart never reduces to the Month branch alone.

This chart is calculated from 11 April 1950 at 03:00. The Month branch 辰 has 戊 (Yang Earth) as its main qi. For a 丙 Day Master, 戊 is Eating God, so the normal Month-Order classification is 食神格 once special structures have been ruled out. Both 寅 branches contain 丙 Fire roots and have 甲 Indirect Resource as main qi, while the three visible 庚 Indirect Wealth stems give the hidden Output a clear Earth-to-Metal destination. The relationships pull in more than one direction: 子辰 forms a partial Water combination that can strengthen Officer pressure, while 寅辰 forms a partial Wood meeting that can reinforce Resource support. No stem combination appears; the visible 丙 controls each 庚. The structure label is clear, but effective strength and the usability of the 食神生财 route still require the competing branch tendencies to be weighed.

This chart is calculated from 11 January 1950 at 03:00. The Month branch 丑 has 己 (Yin Earth) as its main qi. For 丙, 己 is Hurting Officer, so the normal Month-Order classification is 伤官格 once special structures have been ruled out. 己 is also visible in the Year stem and rooted in both 丑 branches, while 庚 Indirect Wealth in the Hour stem provides a visible Earth-to-Metal destination. The Day Master has Fire roots in 午 and 寅 plus 丁 Rob Wealth support in the Month stem. At branch level, 寅午 forms a partial Fire combination, while each 丑 harms 午; both 丑 branches also contain hidden 癸 Direct Officer. No stem combination appears, and both visible Fire stems control 庚. The example therefore shows a recognisable 伤官生财 route whose usefulness still depends on how the Fire support, hidden Officer, and repeated harm affect the chart's effective strength.
The Role of Chart Context
An Output structure does not behave the same way in every chart. The surrounding conditions decide whether the dynamic becomes sustained contribution, scattered effort, or something in between.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Strong Day Master | May have more capacity to sustain outflow, subject to interactions and chart need |
| Weak Day Master | Output may add strain when the chart lacks enough roots or support |
| Resource support 印 | Feeds the Day Master while also controlling Output; may support, refine, or suppress |
| Wealth 财 | Gives Output a possible destination but can also add load or feed Officer |
| Companion 比劫 | Can support the Day Master while also introducing competition |
| Officer 官 | May provide structure; Direct Officer with prominent Hurting Officer creates 伤官见官 tension |
| Branch interactions | Combinations, clashes, harms, punishments, and destructions alter effective strength |
After stem and branch relationships are resolved, Day Master strength is a central part of judging whether the outflow is sustainable. For how that balance is assessed, see Strong and Weak Day Master.
How Output Structure Shows Up in Real Life
An Output structure can raise a few recurring questions, whether Eating God or Hurting Officer sets the Month Order. These are reading prompts, not fixed personality traits.
Career and earning orientation. Does the chart support work where creation, communication, critique, or visible craft matters? Eating God can favour steadier production, while Hurting Officer can favour more direct or revision-oriented work. A usable Output-to-Wealth chain (食伤生财) may connect that work to tangible value, but occupation and income still depend on the wider chart and real-life skills.
Relationship with visibility. Because Output describes what the Day Master produces, a reading can ask how comfortable the person is making work visible and how much identity is tied to performance. Eating God and Hurting Officer may express that question differently, but neither guarantees ease, attention, provocation, or excellence.
Capacity and depletion. Output is what the Day Master releases. The relevant question is whether the chart can sustain repeated production without weakening its foundation. Roots, Resource, season, Wealth, and interactions decide whether the same Output functions as capacity, useful release, or excessive drain.
Expression and self-knowledge. For some people, conversation, craft, or writing becomes a useful way to clarify experience. An Output structure can support that line of inquiry, but emotional processing cannot be diagnosed from the structure alone.
Output in Combination
A single Output star tells you a direction. Combinations tell you dynamics — how expression enters the broader chart and what it does once it is there. The most important combinations for an Output structure are the same ones that shape the Output Stars family in any chart.
| Combination | Chinese name | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Output producing Wealth | 食伤生财 | Output feeds Wealth, creating a possible route from skill or production to tangible value |
| Resource controlling Output | 印制食伤 | Resource restrains Output; strength and chart need decide whether this refines or suppresses expression |
| Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer | 伤官见官 | Self-expression and external authority collide; the result may be productive friction or constant conflict, depending on balance |
| Eating God controlling Seven Killings | 食神制杀 | A usable Eating God restrains Seven Killings pressure when the configuration is strong enough to operate |
Three of these show up often enough in Output structures to deserve a closer pointer.
Output producing Wealth (食伤生财) describes Output feeding Wealth. In practical language, it can provide a bridge from expression, production, or expertise to tangible results. Whether that bridge supports a career or income cannot be read from the chain alone; the Day Master must be able to sustain the outflow, and the Wealth must remain usable after interactions. See Eating God Produces Wealth for the full treatment of this flow.
Resource controlling Output (印制食伤) describes the element that supports the Day Master also restraining what the Day Master produces. That control may refine Output when discipline is useful, or suppress it when Resource is dominant and Output is already vulnerable. Visibility, roots, polarity, season, and chart need decide which reading fits. See Resource Controls Output.
Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer (伤官见官) places self-directed expression beside formal authority. The encounter is not inherently destructive: prominence, effective strength, Resource mediation, and other interactions decide whether either star can function cleanly. See Hurting Officer Sees Officer for the full treatment.
When Output Is Strong in the Chart
A strong, well-supported Output structure means the outflow is prominent and the chart has some capacity to sustain it. That can support visible production, communication, or critique, but it does not by itself establish confidence, skill, vocation, or public appeal.
Strength alone is not a guarantee of ease. Strong Output can still create heavy demand when the Day Master is under-supported, or it can remain difficult to convert when no usable channel exists. The technical question is how much outflow the chart can sustain after effective strength is assessed.
The key question is: can the Day Master sustain the outflow? Resource may help the foundation while also controlling Output, so even apparent support must be judged through the complete configuration rather than counted as automatically beneficial.
Output Outside an Output Structure
An Output structure cannot have Output completely absent: by definition, Eating God or Hurting Officer is the Month branch's main qi. The formed structure can still be weakened, damaged, or difficult to use after interactions and effective strength are assessed.
A chart whose Output element is genuinely weak or absent belongs outside the Output-structure category. That does not predict a lack of creativity or communication ability. It only means those qualities should not be inferred from a natal Output structure; they must be assessed through the chart's actual structure, stars, and timing.
Output and Timing
A chart is not a frozen snapshot. Luck cycles (大运) and annual influences (流年) shift over time, which means the Output element can be activated or suppressed during different life phases. Someone with dormant Output in their natal chart may find that a particular decade or year brings opportunities for expression that were previously out of reach.
For an Output structure, the timing question is specific: does the current cycle widen the Day Master's capacity to produce, or does it add more demand? The label alone cannot answer it. Resource may support the Day Master but can also restrain Output; Wealth may give Output a destination but can add load or feed Officer; more Output increases both expression and outflow; Companion can add support or competition. The incoming stem and branch must be checked against the natal chart and the active Luck Pillar before drawing a conclusion.
The practical use of timing is not to predict when creativity arrives. It is to recognise when the conditions favour building, when they favour consolidating, and when they ask you to slow down rather than push harder.
Working with This Energy
If your chart shows a prominent Output structure, the practical question is whether you are channelling the expression consciously or being run by it.
If the structure leans Eating God. Ask whether its more measured form of production has a workable channel. Ease can support consistency, but it can also leave effort diffuse when no direction is chosen. The useful discipline is staying with one line of work long enough to see whether it develops.
If the structure leans Hurting Officer. Ask whether direct expression is clarifying a problem or merely escalating it. The useful discipline is discernment: choosing where critique can improve an outcome and where restraint is more effective.
If the Day Master is weak relative to the Output. The work is to build capacity before producing more. That may mean strengthening Resource support: mentorship, deliberate recovery, deeper learning, or simply slowing down enough to let the foundation catch up with the demand.
If the Output lacks a Wealth channel. Do not assume expression must become income. If tangible results are the goal, consider what practical destination could receive the Output, such as a product, service, audience, or completed body of work.
Output rewards self-awareness, honest pacing, and the willingness to put imperfect work in front of the world. It asks you to be realistic about what you can sustain and what you need to release. When you work with the pattern consciously, expression becomes a foundation rather than a drain, and "am I creative?" turns out to have been the wrong question all along.
