Seven Killings Structure: How the Chart Manages Pressure 七杀格
Seven Killings Structure is set by the Month Branch main qi, then judged through Day Master strength, Resource, Output, and competing Officer qi.
| Structure | Chinese | Key Ten Gods |

| Seven Killings structure | 七杀格 | Month Order main qi is Seven Killings 七杀 |
Seven Killings (七杀, qī shā) is one of the most misunderstood structures in Bazi (八字). When it appears in a chart, people often assume the worst: conflict, aggression, relentless hardship. But that reading misses the real story. Seven Killings describes a specific kind of force: the element that controls your Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ) with the same polarity. Where Direct Officer (正官) brings structured authority with a built-in buffer, Seven Killings brings raw pressure: intense, direct, and arriving without the complementary cushion that opposite polarity provides.
The structure does not decide your fate or assign a personality. It identifies strong controlling qi in the Month Order and asks whether the Day Master and the rest of the chart can receive, redirect, or restrain it. The label is only the start of that assessment.
The Seven Killings Element
In the Ten Gods (十神, shí shén) framework, Seven Killings is the element that controls the Day Master with the same polarity. Where the gentler Officer star, Direct Officer (正官), controls with opposite polarity, creating a complementary tension with a built-in check, Seven Killings shares the same Yin or Yang charge as the Day Master. The controlling force hits head-on, without that buffer. That mechanical difference is the reason the same controlling element reads very differently depending on whether it lands as Direct Officer or Seven Killings.
| Day Master | Seven Killings 七杀 | Element |

| 甲 Yang Wood | 庚 Yang Metal | Metal 金 |

How the Structure Forms
Classical Bazi does not call a chart a Seven Killings structure just because Seven Killings stars appear somewhere in the chart. A practitioner first resolves the chart's stem and branch interactions, evaluates each element's effective strength, and checks whether a special structure such as a following or transformation structure applies. If no special structure supersedes the normal Ten God structures, the Month branch's main qi (月令主气) sets the structure. When that main qi belongs to Seven Killings, the chart qualifies as a Seven Killings structure.
This means the structure is anchored in the seasonal command, not in a Seven Killings star appearing in a secondary pillar. Month-pillar associations may supply context, but they do not prove a competitive personality or a particular professional environment.
Classical guidance then asks whether Seven Killings has an effective management mechanism. Two important mechanisms are the following.
-
Resource generation (杀印相生): Resource (印) creates a generating chain from Seven Killings through Resource to the Day Master. Its effectiveness depends on the Resource's strength and ability to support the Day Master.
-
Eating God restraint (食神制杀): Eating God (食神) controls Seven Killings directly. Its effectiveness depends on Eating God's strength and the Day Master's ability to produce Output without becoming excessively drained.
Other conditions to assess include:
-
Officer-Killings mixed (官杀混杂): When Direct Officer (正官) and Seven Killings (七杀) both appear prominently, the reader must determine which has effective strength and whether a supported combination, transformation, or control mechanism resolves their competing influence. None of those relations simply deletes a Ten God.
-
Wealth feeding Seven Killings (财滋杀): Wealth produces the Officer element. Strong Wealth may reinforce Seven Killings, but whether that helps or harms depends on the Day Master's capacity, the structure's needs, and any Resource or Output mechanism.
Once special structures have been ruled out and the normal Seven Killings structure identified, the reader still has to judge whether it is supported, mixed, or damaged. A properly formed structure that is subsequently weakened does not behave the same way as a clean one. For the principles behind what keeps a structure intact, see Useful God in Bazi.
Management Mechanisms
The Seven Killings structure branches into two distinct management paths according to classical guidance. These are not personality types. They describe how the chart handles the controlling force.
| Mechanism | Chinese | Key star | Mechanical question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resource generation | 杀印相生 | Seven Killings generates Resource | Can the Resource receive the controlling qi and support the Day Master? |
| Eating God restraint | 食神制杀 | Eating God controls Seven Killings | Is Eating God strong enough to restrain the controlling qi without over-draining the Day Master? |
Resource Absorption 杀印相生
In this pattern, Resource (印) forms a generating chain: Seven Killings produces Resource, and Resource produces the Day Master. The controlling force does not disappear. The reader must check whether Resource is exposed, rooted, and able to pass that qi to the Day Master.
Strong, well-rooted Resource makes this chain more credible. Weak, isolated, combined, or damaged Resource may not carry the Seven Killings qi effectively. Any interpretation involving learning, support, or authority still requires pillar placement and lived context.
Eating God Restraint 食神制杀
Here, Eating God (食神) controls Seven Killings directly. The Day Master produces Eating God, so the reader must check both sides of the equation: whether Output can restrain Seven Killings and whether producing that Output over-drains the Day Master. Weak, unrooted, or heavily damaged Eating God may not provide effective restraint.
Two example charts
The calculator-derived charts below illustrate the two management mechanisms. Both use a Bing Fire (丙) Day Master born in Pig (亥) month. Pig's main qi is Ren Water (壬), Seven Killings for Bing, so both genuinely satisfy the Month-order requirement for Seven Killings Structure. Jia Wood (甲) is Indirect Resource, Yi Wood (乙) is Direct Resource, and Wu Earth (戊) is Eating God.

This chart is calculated from 26 November 1954 at 11:00. Pig Month contains Ren Seven Killings as main qi and Jia Indirect Resource as middle qi. Yi Direct Resource is exposed in the Month Stem, while Jia Indirect Resource appears in both the Year and Hour stems. Ren therefore generates a visible Resource layer, which in turn generates the Bing Fire Day Master. The two Horse branches and Dog provide Fire support, and Horse with Dog forms a partial Fire frame missing Tiger. The Horses also self-punish, so strong support does not make the chart relation-free. This is a clear Resource-generation route, but any life interpretation still depends on effective strength and placement.

This chart is calculated from 22 November 1970 at 19:00. Pig Month again carries Ren Seven Killings as main qi. Wu Eating God is exposed in the Hour Stem and rooted as main qi in both Dog branches, giving the restraint mechanism substantial support. The Bing Day Master sits on Horse, Ding Rob Wealth is exposed in the Month Stem, and Horse with the two Dogs forms a partial Fire frame missing Tiger. Geng Indirect Wealth is visible in the Year Stem and can generate Water through the Five-Element cycle, while Bing and Ding control Geng at stem level. The result is a genuine Seven Killings Structure with visible, rooted Eating God restraint and no branch clash or harm.
The Role of Chart Context
A Seven Killings Structure does not behave the same way in every chart. The Month Order establishes the structure; effective strength and the wider chart determine whether that controlling qi can function usefully.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Strong Day Master | May have more capacity to receive controlling qi, subject to the rest of the chart |
| Weak Day Master | May need support or restraint before Seven Killings can function effectively |
| Resource 印 | Provides the generating route from Seven Killings to the Day Master when usable |
| Eating God 食神 | Controls Seven Killings when sufficiently strong and not over-draining the Day Master |
| Wealth 财 | Generates the Officer element; the result depends on whether more controlling qi is useful |
| Companion 比劫 | Reinforces the Day Master and may help a weak chart or burden an already strong one |
| Branch interactions | Combinations, clashes, harms, punishments, and frames change effective strength |
Day Master strength is important, but it is not a personality or health diagnosis. For how that balance is judged, see Strong and Weak Day Master.
Questions the Structure Raises
The structure supplies technical questions rather than a fixed life story:
Can the Day Master receive the control? Check seasonal strength, roots, Companion, Resource, and whether the chart qualifies for a special structure before treating Seven Killings as usable or excessive.
Which mechanism is actually present? Resource generation and Eating God restraint are different qi routes. Visibility, roots, season, and competing relations decide whether either route works.
Is Wealth reinforcing the controlling element? Wealth generates Officer qi, but more Seven Killings is not automatically harmful. The chart may need that qi, or it may already carry more than the Day Master can use.
What does placement add? Pillar associations can guide questions about environment, work, relationships, or later concerns. They do not prescribe an occupation, temperament, or personal history.
Key Seven Killings Interactions
These labels describe qi relationships, not personality types:
| Interaction | Chinese name | Technical reading |
|---|---|---|
| Seven Killings generating Resource | 杀印相生 | Seven Killings generates Resource, which generates the Day Master |
| Eating God controlling Seven Killings | 食神制杀 | Eating God directly controls the Seven Killings element |
| Wealth generating Seven Killings | 财滋杀 | Wealth generates Officer qi and may strengthen Seven Killings |
| Officer-Killings mixed | 官杀混杂 | Direct Officer and Seven Killings both contribute controlling qi |
For Wealth generating Seven Killings, determine whether the added Officer qi supports or damages the chart. Resource or Eating God may manage it, but the conclusion cannot be made from the production cycle alone. For the broader Wealth–Officer dynamic, see Wealth Supports Officer.
Clean, Mixed, and Damaged Structures
A Seven Killings Structure exists because the Month Branch main qi is Seven Killings after special structures have been ruled out. It therefore cannot also be an "absent Seven Killings Structure." Seven Killings may be hidden, exposed, effectively strong, redirected, or damaged, but the classification and its condition are separate questions.
A cleaner structure has a coherent management route and no unresolved Direct Officer mixture. A mixed structure requires comparison of Direct Officer and Seven Killings strength and any supported relation that changes their effective influence. A damaged structure may retain its name while failing to function cleanly because its useful mechanism is weak, clashed, combined, or overwhelmed.
These conditions do not diagnose chronic stress, sleep problems, burnout, or any other health condition. Health claims require a chart-level elemental imbalance and timing context, remain non-diagnostic, and cannot replace medical advice.
Seven Killings and Timing
Luck cycles (大运) and annual influences (流年) add temporary stems and branches. Assess their exact polarity, roots, and relations rather than treating an entire element cycle as one outcome.
A Resource stem or branch may support 杀印相生 if it is usable and can participate in the chain. Eating God specifically may strengthen 食神制杀; generic Output also includes Hurting Officer and should not be treated as the same mechanism. Wealth may generate more Officer qi, while Companion reinforces the Day Master. Whether those changes help depends on the natal structure and every competing relation.
Timing does not specify when hardship, competition, or a career event must occur. It shows when particular qi and relationships are added to the natal chart.
A Practical Reading Order
- Rule out a special structure before using the normal Month-order classification.
- Confirm that the Month Branch main qi is Seven Killings for the Day Master.
- Resolve stem and branch relations, then assess effective strength.
- Identify whether Resource generation, Eating God restraint, or another supported mechanism manages Seven Killings.
- Check Direct Officer mixture and whether Wealth adds useful or excessive Officer qi.
- Add Luck Pillar and annual timing only after the natal structure is clear.
Seven Killings Structure is not automatically good or bad. Its value comes from accurately identifying the controlling qi, the Day Master's capacity, and the mechanism that makes the structure workable.
